Lidwork vs Clamshell (the app)

Two paid apps that keep a closed MacBook awake, built very differently. Not to be confused with Apple's clamshell mode.

Updated · by Sasha Yakovlev, maker of Lidwork

Quick answer

Clamshell (clamshell.dev) keeps a closed MacBook awake without a helper or password, on Apple Silicon with macOS 14+, for $9.99 per Mac ($19.99 for 3). Lidwork ($9.99 once on the Mac App Store, every Mac on your Apple Account) also needs no password, adds a small background part that turns lid sleep back on if the app crashes or hangs, and stops at a 10/20/30% battery level. Clamshell has a 7-day trial and a 14-day refund; Lidwork refunds go through Apple.

Clamshell is a well-made, popular paid app with an extensive guide library. If you're comparing the two, here's what we could verify on 29 Oct 2026. Clamshell facts come from its own website and comparison guides.

Where Clamshell is the better choice

  • No background part at all. If you never want an extra item in Login Items, Clamshell's approach avoids it.
  • A free trial. Clamshell has a 7-day trial; Lidwork has none.
  • Setapp. If you already subscribe, it's included.

Where Lidwork is the better choice

  • Several Macs. One $9.99 purchase works on every Mac signed in to your Apple Account.
  • Documented crash recovery and battery floor. A dead or hung Lidwork app can't leave sleep switched off: its background part turns lid sleep back on — at once after a crash, within 30 seconds after a hang. Normal sleep also returns at your 10/20/30% battery limit, or when macOS reports the Mac is seriously hot.

Verdict

Both solve the same problem. Pick Clamshell for a design with no background part and a free trial on an Apple Silicon Mac; pick Lidwork for one purchase for all your Macs, a battery floor, and a documented fail-safe.
